Band Images:

All bands have an image that is recognizable to either themselves specifically, or to the genre of music. For example, it is easy to tell the difference between a pop band and a rock band. This includes clothing, personality and maybe type of promotion such as their logos or videos.

Enter Shikari are a perfect example of this. The genre of the band, especially at this stage in their career is Trance/Metal. Automatically, they are associated with the Trance genre by the excessive use of bright colours. However, their rock elements are seen with their guitars, perhaps long or scruffy hair, and live instruments such as guitar, bass, synthesizer and drums. It is definitely clear that Enter Shikari have a distinct image that matches their genre. This picture also may suggest that they are an energetic band and people.

About our project and demo of song...

For our production that will be a music video, a CD album cover and a magazine cover featuring the artist, we have chose to film our own band. The song we are using is one of our own band, Undershot's, songs titled 'Jarhead'. We have recorded a demo of it so far to show the song and the atmosphere of the music.

Album Cover Examples..

This is an example of an album cover by the band The Blackout. This is very specific to the band as it is a "concept" album which usually has a story to it or has something specific to the band. This seems to be a particular brand as it is obvious just by looking at the album cover what mood the music will have to it, and to which genre it will belong to. The dark colouring used shows that the album has a dark mood and a perhaps heavy metal influence genre.

However, brands differ also. This album cover from Linkin Park's Minutes To Midnight shows a more serious "only about the music" band. This shows that the song

s on it are not based

on a story but maybe about real life situations. It is obvious from looking at both albums covers that Linkin Park are a much bigger band which

would play a lot of stadiums and have high

budgets, given by a major record label such as Warner Bros. This is obvious because it is in simple and in black and white, meaning that the bands purpose is just black and white, which is to play good

music.

Typical Conventions:

There are many conventions that can be spotted in music videos that are film making techniques or perhaps the narrative.

Cinematography - Extensive use of close ups and extreme close up shots, mid shots, long shots to establish the setting. These are used in order to focus on the band.

Narrative - The narrative is usually focused on the band's performance with rock bands, although some have a combination of performance and story, and some just have a story that the song follows. The video usually ties in with the lyrics.

Branding

Brands and products are different. Rather than being the particular product itself, the brand is the actual category the product fits in to. For example, the band is the brand of the music video, which would be the product. This is because the band are the people who produce the songs, albums, videos, posters or magazines.

FOR EXAMPLE:
Incubus (brand) - A Crow Left Of The Murder album (product)

Cadbury's (brand) - Dairy Milk chocolate bar (product)

It brands and products are present everywhere with the music industry and even food production.

Introduction

Our group for our A2 Media Studies coursework is made up from Joseph Beard and Roxanne Allen. For our coursework, we have chosen to produce a music promotion brief, making a music video for an artist as the main product. We will create a typical product that will show the band, their song and their image. The video will be used as a single for the band.

- Other tasks:
* A Digipak CD/DVD cover package for the band's album
* A magazine cover used to promote the band and it's album
